About Dave Lear

Captain Dave Lear is licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard, with 25+ years of experience fishing Florida’s Big Bend and Panhandle coastal waters. As a contributing editor and boat tester for several national fishing and boating magazines, his award-winning writing has taken him throughout the United States, the Caribbean and Central America to the South Pacific on  assignments. He is currently a highly-regarded freelance writer, editor and photographer and an active member of the Professional Outdoor Media Association.

Capt. Lear started his journalism career as the editor of Marlin magazine in 1990 after graduating with honors from the University of West Florida. Under his tenure, the publication won several awards and launched the successful tournament newsletter, The Rip Line.

Lear went on to serve as the statewide communications director for the Florida Conservation Association during the hard-fought Net Ban campaign before assuming the role of executive director of The Billfish Foundation. Lear also directed the successful effort to unify Florida’s fish and wildlife management under the state constitution. He is a life member of the Coastal Conservation Association and International Game Fish Association. In 2007, Capt. Lear was recognized by the IGFA as the 51st angler to earn membership in the exclusive Royal Billfish Slam Club.
